Death of an Explorer

the death occurred today of one of the greatest explorers of our modern times. celebrated for being one of the first two persons to successfully reach the summit of mount everest (along with sherpa tenzing norgay), sir edmund hillary, instead of resting on his laurels, decided to make a lasting impact on this world.
he could have easily hogged the limelight , profiteering for personal gain and let all the hoopla surrounding the feat go into his head but instead he remained humble and for the rest of his life used his celebrity status to improve the lives of those who helped him in his everest endeavour…the sherpas of nepal.
a true hero and someone worth following unlike those celebrities of today who intentionally seek the limelight…

Happy & Peaceful 2008…..yeah right:(
January 9, 20082008 dawned with all the usual “happy new year”, “peace on earth” crap still ringing in the ears but so far (at least for us sri lankans) it has been anything but a happy & peaceful 2008…
january 1 – vocal opposition minister assasinated. suspected to be the work of shadowy group(s) affiliated or in the very least sympathetic to the government
january 2 – bomb targeting army bus explodes in the capital city of colombo. tamil tiger terrorists suspected
january 8 – government minister assasinated. again, tamil tigers the main suspects
january 8 – explosion opposite a government owned newspaper centre
january 16 – bomb targets a bus carrying civilians. again, believed to be the handiwork of tamil tiger rebels.
add to that the general fear climate that is now prevailing in the county with further expected attacks, kidnappings or unexplained abductions (especially those of the minority communities), attempts to intimidate or stifle the independent media, an economy that is fast approaching the levels of a failed state and a bungling government that is more preoccupied with political maneuvers than real governance….sure, it looks to be a very pretty 2008…
